THE STUDENT’S LIFE SATISFACTION SCALE (1991)

BY E. SCOTT HUEBNER

ABOUT

Similar to the SWLS, the student's life satisfaction scale measures universal psychological judgements of satisfaction with one's life through five short statements to help individuals get a sense of satisfaction with their lives as a whole. However, it was intentionally designed for children and young people aged 8-18 years old.

HOW IT WORKS

The scale contains seven statements which are given a score from 1-6, with 1 being 'strongly disagree' and 6 being 'strongly agree'. However, the last two questions are reverse scored...

  • My life is going well.
  • My life is just right.
  • I would like to change many things in my life.
  • I wish I had a different kind of life.
  • I have a good life.
  • I have what I want in life.
  • My life is better than most kids.

RESULTS

  • 5 - 9 = Extremely dissatisfied
  • 10 - 14 = Dissatisfied
  • 15 - 19 = Slightly dissatisfied
  • 20 = Neutral
  • 21 - 25 = Slightly satisfied
  • 26 - 30 = Satisfied
  • 31 - 35 = Extremely satisfied
