THE MISSION

When you see the words "media", what pops up in your mind?

Is it the never-ending posts from Facebook, or the dance trends of TikTok? Maybe, it's the ding of a notification, the image of cute cats and dogs, or the cursed song that can never be unheard, Despacito. Whatever it may be, I'll tell you what I think of.

They're two simple words: health and wellness.

The media have played a great job in the way we learn, educate, communicate, and unwind. They have a significance in all generations and the way us humans perceive life, especially how we understand these two terms.

Health and wellness have definitions that are much more complex than the fact that you're living, breathing, and free from sickness. They're a part of various aspects of humanity and the lifestyles we have. This is why it is necessary to understand what exactly it means to be healthy and well.

As time passes, our knowledge of the world and the human body is continually growing, and this is where the media comes to play. It is a very influential setting, having many upsides and downsides to it. While our world evolves, the media will continue to build on its control in the way society understands this information.

With my project here on kaizen, the newer generations and the teens my age can learn more about the importance of our health and wellness, as well as the power that social media has in our daily lives. This website can allow people to reflect on their current way of life and how their definitions of health and wellness have developed. It would also be an opportunity to address particular topics like substance abuse, sexual activity, and eating habits, that do not appear often enough in school environments.

That is what inspires me to do this project: going past the boundaries of a classroom to motivate others to find satisfaction and happiness in life. My goal is to help others search for what they want in life; to help others find their "why", their purpose. But, it all starts with these two words: health and wellness, which brings me to my essential question for this Capstone project:

How are health and wellness (intellectual, mental, emotional, and physical) portrayed in the media (television, cinema and social)?
