Well-being is happiness, but happiness is not well-being

THE GENERAL DEFINITION





Well-being is a state/condition where you are happy, healthy, comfortable, and satisfied. This also includes:

  • The presence of positive emotions and moods The absence of negative emotions
  • Satisfaction with life
  • Fulfillment and positive functioning






Normally, good health, positive social relationships, and availability/access to basic resources are factors that determine well-being.

Other factors:

  • genes, temperament, and personality
  • age and gender
  • income and work
  • relationships
  • country and society
  • more economically developed and more effective governments with low levels of corruption = higher well-being
  • higher levels of trust = higher well-being
  • meet citizens' basic needs for food and health = higher well-being
  • cultural factors (e.g. social norms and individualism vs. collectivism)
